FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Secure, free, private online file sharing — how to send files without registration, share files that auto-expire, and keep everything encrypted.

Security & encryption

What is the most secure way to share files online?

The most secure way to share files online is end-to-end encryption, where files are encrypted on your own device and the service never holds the key. Marsdrop encrypts every file in your browser with AES-256-GCM before upload, and the decryption key stays inside the link — so the server only ever sees unreadable ciphertext.

Can I share files anonymously?

Yes. Marsdrop needs no account and stores only a hashed (not raw) IP address for rate limiting, so you can share files anonymously. The filename and contents are encrypted too, so we can't see what you sent or who you sent it to.

How does Marsdrop encrypt my files?

Encryption happens client-side using the browser's Web Crypto API with AES-256-GCM. A unique key is generated per file, the file is encrypted before upload, and every download is verified against the original file's SHA-256 hash so you know it wasn't altered.

Sending files

How do I send a file that automatically expires or self-destructs?

When you upload, you choose an expiry (from 1 hour to 7 days) and a download limit. Once the file expires, reaches its limit, or you revoke it, the encrypted file is automatically deleted — a temporary, self-destructing file share that leaves nothing behind.

How do I share a PDF or large file securely?

Open Marsdrop, drop your PDF or file, and it's encrypted in your browser before it's uploaded. Share the generated link with the recipient — only someone with the full link can decrypt and download it. Add an optional password or a short expiry for extra protection.

What is the maximum file size I can send?

Anonymous uploads are currently limited to 150 MB per file in Secure Link mode. Direct P2P transfers stream browser-to-browser over WebRTC and aren't stored on a server.

What's the difference between Secure Link and Direct P2P?

Secure Link encrypts your file and uploads it, then gives you a link the recipient can open anytime — best when they aren't online. Direct P2P streams the file straight from your browser to theirs with nothing stored on a server — best when both of you are online at once.

Access & control

Can I share files for free without registration or signing up?

Yes. Marsdrop is free online file sharing with no registration, no account, and no email required. You just drop a file, get a link, and share it — no sign-up, no tracking, no profiles.

What is the best free secure file sharing site?

For privacy, the best free file sharing puts the encryption in your hands. Marsdrop encrypts files client-side, needs no registration, auto-deletes them on expiry, and is free — making it a strong choice for secure, private, no-sign-up file sharing. Privacy you can verify, not just trust.

Can I revoke a file link after sharing it?

Yes. When you upload, you also get a private management link. Open it to revoke the drop instantly, view download stats, or extend the expiry. Keep that link to yourself — it's your control panel for the file.

What happens if I lose the link?

Because Marsdrop has no accounts, the share link is the only way to open a drop and the management link is the only way to control it. If you lose them we can't recover them — but the drop will still expire and delete itself on schedule. Save important links somewhere safe.

Comparisons

How secure is Dropbox or Google Drive file sharing compared to Marsdrop?

Dropbox and Google Drive encrypt files on their servers, but they hold the keys and can access your files. Marsdrop is zero-knowledge: files are encrypted in your browser and the key never reaches us, so no one — not even Marsdrop — can read your files. That's the difference between trusting a provider and verifying it.

Is Marsdrop a good WeTransfer or Firefox Send alternative?

Yes. Marsdrop is a privacy-focused alternative to WeTransfer and the discontinued Firefox Send. Unlike services that can read your uploads, Marsdrop encrypts everything in your browser and the server never sees your files or keys.
